- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
- For frosting: 1 cup butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup strawberry puree
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour evenly into prepared pans.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
- For assembly: Place one cake layer on a plate, spread with strawberry puree, add sliced strawberries, and top with the second layer.
- Frost the entire cake with prepared frosting and decorate with additional strawberries.
Notes
Ensure strawberries are fresh and ripe for the best flavor. Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
