Description

Festive, buttery sugar cookies cut into cheerful Christmas tree shapes and decorated with a simple vanilla icing and colorful sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk
  • Green food coloring
  • Assorted sprinkles

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  3. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a smooth dough forms. Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 2 hours.
  4. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into Christmas tree shapes and place on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  5. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. For the icing, whisk together powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add a few drops of green food coloring. Decorate the cooled cookies with icing and sprinkles.
