Description
A classic Italian-American dish featuring tender steak simmered in a flavorful tomato sauce with garlic, onions, and herbs.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 beef steaks (such as sirloin or round), about 1-inch thick
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Season the steaks with salt and pepper, then sear them in the skillet for 2-3 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add onion and garlic; sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and red wine if using. Bring to a simmer.
- Return the steaks to the skillet, spooning sauce over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes until steaks are tender.
- Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes to the sauce. Serve with pasta or crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
