Description

A classic Italian-American dish featuring tender steak simmered in a flavorful tomato sauce with garlic, onions, and herbs.


Ingredients

  • 2 beef steaks (such as sirloin or round), about 1-inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Season the steaks with salt and pepper, then sear them in the skillet for 2-3 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add onion and garlic; sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and red wine if using. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Return the steaks to the skillet, spooning sauce over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes until steaks are tender.
  6. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes to the sauce. Serve with pasta or crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
