Description

A classic British dish featuring crispy battered fish served with golden chips, perfect for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g cod fillets
  • 200g all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 200ml beer or sparkling water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cut into chips

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Gradually add beer to the flour mixture, whisking until smooth to form the batter.
  3. Pat the cod fillets dry and dip them into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated.
  4. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pan to 180°C.
  5. Fry the battered fish for 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy; remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. For the chips, parboil the potato slices for 5 minutes, then fry until golden.
  7. Serve the fish and chips hot with lemon wedges and tartar sauce.

Notes

For a lighter version, use sparkling water instead of beer. Ensure oil is hot to avoid soggy batter.
