For the Crust:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup hot water
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses until well combined.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the hot water, until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
