Description

A classic homemade French bread that is crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the sugar, oil, salt, and 3 cups of flour; beat until smooth.
  2. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  4. Punch dough down. Divide in half and shape into loaves. Place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Mix egg white and 1 tablespoon water; brush over loaves. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

For a crispier crust, place a pan of hot water on the bottom rack of the oven while baking.
