For the Crust:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon purple food coloring
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
