Description

Soft and chewy red velvet sugar cookies with a rich, cocoa flavor and a hint of vanilla.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons red food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Mix in the red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, use high-quality cocoa powder and let the dough chill for 30 minutes before baking to prevent spreading.
