Description

Soft, buttery, and perfectly sweet sugar cookies that hold their shape beautifully for decorating with colorful icing and sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Mix in the sour cream until a soft dough forms.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  5. Bake for 7-9 minutes, or until the edges are just barely starting to turn golden. The centers should remain soft. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Decorate as desired.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
